We're a non-uniform school — here's why
Branded polos and hoodies are available if your young person finds them useful — many do, for the sensory predictability of a same-every-day choice or for a sense of belonging. But they are never required. Scratchy collars, tight waistbands and rigid ties are real sensory, trauma and anxiety triggers for our cohort, and we refuse to begin a school day with a fight over the thing that, of all things, should just feel comfortable.
Our learners are also 14–19, transitioning to workplaces, colleges and supported internships where the real world operates a dress code, not a uniform. Teaching them to read a dress code and make an appropriate choice for themselves is a named Preparing for Adulthood outcome in most EHCPs. It's a skill, and we practise it every day. PPE for practical sessions is always supplied by us, as is a change of clothes drawer for anyone who needs it. No family is ever asked to buy a uniform.
